Folx has stepped right in to create their own version of the medication, which means that access to PrEP no longer has to be prohibitively expensive. This April, however, Gilead’s patent on PrEP expired, allowing other companies to create their own generic version of the 99%-effective drug. You all remember the charming Martin Shkreli, who famously hiked up the price of the HIV medication Daraprim in 2015? Bessemer Venture Partners, Define Ventures and Polaris Partners, investors in the company’s $25 million haul in February last year, also participated. Folx and its backers hope that their funding round can serve as reminder that they and others are committed to providing care even as it’s being attacked.ħwireVentures and Foresite Capital led the latest fundraise, and 7wireVentures’ managing partner, Lee Shapiro, will join Folx’s board of directors.
